Thankfully, there is a save point right next to this part. There is a heat run where you need to flawlessly run through about 4 rooms without the Varia suit. Also, the exploration may be a bit too much for some. Once you get to a certain height, you just kind of get pushed back down, almost like increased gravity. For some reason, the creator decided to limit the jump height. This one has a ton of major flaws (but I still love it). The map is absolutely massive, and I think this one ended up taking me about 25 hours to get through. Not that its the best, but it is definitely the biggest. Some of the new weapons also are not very good. One warning though - there are a few times that I REALLY got stuck and could not figure out where to go. There is a volcano area, a snowy area, a big tower - totally new environments for a Metroid game. If you are looking for something totally unique, give this one a shot. When you find all of them, you get something special. On top of that, it has these collectibles (can't remember what they are called, but I believe there are 50 of them), which are hidden inside of walls all around the map. While most other hacks have tile sets and assets which are re-arranged right from SM, this one has brand new tile sets, brand new enemies, and even brand new weapons. Of all the SM hacks I have played, this one is probably the most original. There is a very specific reason I included this one on the list. You will likely get stuck a couple times (I believe around Brinstar and Maridia), but it is very rewarding once you figure it all out.

It is not the absolute easiest, but since the combat and platforming isn’t ramped up, it is easy to digest. While the exploration is ramped up though, I found the combat to be easier, which leveled out the overall frustration.ĮDIT: Just wanted to add that this is probably the best hack for ROM hack beginners to start with. If you are someone who likes more linear Metroidvania games and hate getting lost, I would probably steer clear of this one. It's not the best-designed ROM hack, or the most well-paced, but the increased jump height and the open-ended nature of the hack really add to the sequence-breaking element, making exploration really fun. When you get the hi-jump boots, it's almost like you activated a Game Genie cheat. Possibly the quintessential SM hack, Hyper Metroid is aptly named, adding 'hyper' physics to the game - specifically in the increased jump height. It feels like the most expertly-crafted SM ROM hack. If you want a bigger, more colorful, decently more challenging version of Super Metroid, I would start here. Unlike some other hacks on this list, the exploration isn't overly challenging and you can always find your way with a little searching. The very beginning was a little weird to me, but once you get into it, it's amazing. It is the most balanced, best paced hack I have played. I'd have to say this is the most well-received SM ROM Hack. This is the newest hack on this list, as it came out about a year ago.
